The Pencil Test
Thanks to our sister-in-law Brandy, we learned about the Pencil test-an old wive's tale used to predict a baby's gender. It was a wild and crazy night at the Zapp house in Kearney, Nebraska, as we got the necessary equipment:
-A number 2 lead pencil, newly sharpened
-A needle and thread
According to folklore, you stick the needle with thread onto the eraser head of the pencil. Then you hold the thread and dangle the pencil over the pregnant lady's belly bump. If the pencil turns clock-wise, it's a girl. If the pencil swings back and forth like a pendulum, it's a boy. If the pencil swings, stops and then swings again, the stop indicates a "break" with the second swing indicating your next child's gender, etc.
The folklore has worked so far for Brandy and the "wise" pencil indicated that Leif and I will be having a baby girl. Should we skip the ultrasound on December 21? Nah, I think we'll keep the appointment and see what the Doctor's have to say about a Baby Girl or Baby Boy Ullman.

I Heart You Elastic Waist-Band Maternity Pants or Ode to the Maternity Pant

This Thanksgiving, not only will I be grateful for the little baby growing inside me but also for the new discovery that has changed my life…elastic waist-band maternity pants. After years of sucking in my stomach, it’s a relief to finally let it all stick out there with the support and give of the maternity pant. I also have to give a shout-out to the “Belly-Band” an elastic waist band that allows you to keep your “regular” pants unbuttoned, but yet holds up your pants. It’s such a wonderful invention that our friend Adam is considering buying one for Thanksgiving.
So, this Thanksgiving, when your pant buttons are about to pop, please think of me and my elastic waist band pants, as I go for yet another helping of green bean casserole.

What Have You Done For Me Lately?
As many expectant husbands or fathers probably know by now, there's no "one-upping" a pregnant lady.
The other evening, Leif and I were debating on which one of us should unload the dishwasher. Leif began listing all of the nice things he had done for me that day: drove me to work because of the snow and ice, folded the laundry, etc. He then looked at me and said "what have you done for me today?"
I looked at him, put a hand on my little baby belly, and said "I carried your child, that's what I did for you today."
Needless to say, Leif unloaded the dishwasher that night.

Well, it's official. We are due on May 12, 2010. We got the positive result on Sept 2nd, and have had a few Dr. appointments since then. Below is one of our first ultrasounds @ 10wks. More to come...
